Communal Weaving + Co-Creation

The weaving artists at HeartShare came together to create their first communal piece, working alonside each other, interweaving each of their unique styles with a variety of waste materials such as fabric, plastic bag and mylar balloon strips and ribbons. The following pages celebrate both the collective art piece created over a few weeks in the summer and their individual weavings that have been created in the program over the last 18 months.

Barbara Cuthel, ArtShare Co-creator At HeartShare Human Services of New York

“The individuals here are like the hidden treasure of New York, most people don't know they can do things like this, there is so much creativity and life going on.”

Anna Maie Southern, Teaching Artist - Intertwine Arts weaving program at HeartShare

“ I think from my experience of working with people with disabilities, especially physical disabilities, it's important to provide techniques and equipment that is accessible. It's all about making sure everyone is included and that can be really hard if they physically can't use the loom or paintbrush. And that's why we use the Saori loom that has accessible adaptations that are really helpful.”
